What's New? Update – March 14, 2004
It's hard to believe that it's been over three months since I last updated this site. But it has been a busy few months - most of it good. Here's the update:
On December 9th I led an evening workshop in Boston sponsored by the Caron Foundation. It was called "I Dread the Holidays!" Open to all, but primarily for people in recovery, the workshop looked at creating new ways to celebrate - free of old hurtful patterns. It was a good way to enter the season.
To update the summer events in Yorkshire, England: both workshops are fully registered and have waiting lists. However, if you are still considering attending, there is hope. We are trying to negotiate additional rooms for participants. So if you are interested, do apply. In addition to England, Wales, and Scotland, people are coming from the USA, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, France, Sweden, Spain, and possibly Canada, Australia, and Ireland.
If you don't make it this summer, plans are well underway for the Summer of 2005, probably to take place in Wales. Keep checking this Web site - or contact Bob Balfour for details.
People have also begun to sign up for our annual summer male survivor weekend in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (August 6-8). Thom Harrigan and I always look forward to this event.
In late January, I did a daylong professional training for the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault (NYCAASA). This wonderful organization is comprised of people who work in NYC's Rape Crisis Centers. They are committed to understanding the issues of male survivors and improving services for them. They are a dedicated and powerful group; they gave me further evidence that things are changing for the better.
On March 26, 2004, Robin Moulds and I will co-lead a workshop at the annual conference of True Colors, Inc., Connecticut's organization for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning Youth.This amazing annual two-day conference (March 26-27th) draws thousands of young people, teachers, and other professionals from throughout New England and beyond.(See the Upcoming events page for details.)
Thom has also been kept busy working with the Victims Rights Committee. This independent body of professionals oversees the therapy being offered by the Boston Archdiocese to survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy.
More on the ongoing saga of the forthcoming revised and updated Second Edition of Victims No Longer. Just when it seemed that everything was set and we were about to go to print, the photographer refused permission for the intended cover photograph. (Someday I may write about the intense and protracted struggle to obtain the right kind of cover image - but not now.) The result was a frantic search for a new image. After a stressful week of intensive searching, we came up with a wonderful photgraph, were able to obtain permission, and it looks like we are back on schedule. So you can look for the book to appear on the shelves withing the next few weekes - complete with new cover. Let me know how you like it.
I've agreed to write an article about male survivor issues for Contemporary Sexuality, the newletter of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). And I'll be writing the foreword for a new edition of Father's Touch, Donald D'Haene's excellent memoir of abuse and recovery. This promises to be a busy Spring.
Finally, I have been contacted recently about doing male survivor workshops and trainings in New Jersey, Eastern Canada, and Ireland. I'll supply information as it develops.
